Loch Ness Monster

The mystery of the Loch Ness Monster is about a creature that is supposed to be living in a deep freshwater lake (loch) near Inverness, a city in northern Scotland. Categorized as a lake monster, the Loch Ness has been claimed to be a large creature with a long neck. The earliest claims to the tales of the Loch Ness date back to 565 BC when St. Columba saved a pict, who had been attacked by the monster.

As there are no known evidences of the said incident other than the mention of it in the life of St. Columba, there have been criticisms regarding the reliability of the source. Some other reports claim that the monster was seen around the year 1933 when a couple spotted a large creature. The story created a furore and media persons hogged the area for more information.

The next year, that is in 1934 a photograph allegedly taken by a surgeon that showed a large creature having a long neck, was published. This was regarded as the conclusive evidence in the favour of the Loch Ness Monster. However decades later, in the year 1994 a man named Marmaduke Wetherell claimed that the photograph had been a fake and the name of the surgeon was publicized to add credibility to the claim.

Whether the Loch Ness Monster is real or not, it surely holds significance for the local population as innumerable hotels, inns, boat operators, tour operator and merchants of stuff associated with the monster have found business.

A research organization by the name of The Loch Ness Investigation Bureau had been set up in 1962 to conduct research and provide information about the monster. The organization set up camera stations with ultramodern technologies to capture any sighting of the monster but to no avail. Therefore the legend lives on and even though people visit the loch for other reasons than the monster, there are chances that the mystery is here to stay.

Recently I visited Loch Ness in search of the famous Monster, I spent a week visiting other areas of Scotland which I will also cover in on this site in the coming weeks so keep tuned. I used a Motor home for my travels which was very good as it allowed me to travel with no worries of accommodation.
