What best explains UFOs ?

Back in July, unexplained Mysteries ran an onsite poll to find out just what people thought about the UFO phenomenon.

The poll ran for a period of 3 months, and asked the question “What best explains the UFO Phenomenon ?”. In the present day and age the general view on UFOs seems to be a lot more varied than in the past, in particular more people are willing to accept explanations other than alien visitation to explain them. The modern UFO phenomenon began back in 1947, when pilot Kenneth Arnold witnessed a number of disc shaped objects flying in formation over the Cascade Mountains. When later interviewed about what he had seen, Arnold was quoted as saying that the objects moved ‘like a saucer would if you skipped it across the water’. The results of the poll were very interesting. Out of nearly 2300 votes, 41% were still convinced that UFOs are alien visitors from another planet. 19% however, believed that UFOs are “Black Projects”, secret technologies being tested by the military.

This explanation in particular has gained considerable support over the years, in particular after a wave of sightings of triangular UFOs in the 1980′s were later revealed to be caused by testing of the previously unknown ‘stealth’ fighter.

A more unusual explanation for UFOs received 8% of the votes in the poll – the idea that UFOs are actually humans who have travelled backwards the idea that UFOs are actually humans who have travelled backwards in time. There is no evidence to support this however. The more skeptical of those who voted made up 29% of the total vote, with 14% crediting UFOs to incidents of mass hysteria, 9% to ‘something else’ and 6% refused to believe that UFOs exist at all.
