What is Parapsychology?

What is Parapsychology?

What is Parapsychology?

The term “parapsychology” is said to have been invented by psychologist Max Dessoir around the time of 1889 if not before and it emerged as a field of interest in the late 19th century. It was then called psychical research.

Parapsychology today is described as the scientific study and search for confirmation of paranormal phenomena such as ESP, telepathy or clairvoyance. paranormal means “beside” or “beyond” normal and it refers to strange or odd experiences which do not seem to have an explanation for occurring.

Parapsychology is the study of perceptions, events and behaviors which do not fall into the category of what most people would consider a human can. Special abilities such as
ESP and telepathy are called psi or paranormal abilities. Parapsychology is an attempt to find and describe things that are unusual and outside the realm of traditional experience

paranormal occurrences almost always appear to be bizarre mysterious or unusual. In general they are quite rare but there are some who claim to have frequent paranormal experiences.

Para psychological phenomena can generally be broken down into three general categories:

• Telepathy which is the ability to communicate with another by only the power of the mind
• Clairvoyance or precognition which involves the ability to learn or have knowledge of events which have not yet happened
• Telekinesis which is the ability to move objects by the power of the mind

Spiritualism involves the ability to commutate with spirits of the dead and it is closely related to telepathy, clairvoyance and telekinesis because it often involves the moving of objects and predictions of the future.

A common misconception is that a parapsychology is of a psychic nature. This is far from the truth. Parapsychology is a scientist or scholar who is seriously interested in the “paranormal.”

Parapsychology is the study of phenomena suggesting that the assumption of a strict separation between subjective and objective may be wrong.

What do parapsychologists study?

The basic parapsychology phenomena are classified as follows:

Psi: is a term used for parapsychology phenomena. Psi, psychic, and psychical are other terms used.
Telepathy: is communication between two or more people without speaking a word. Communication can take place between people or between a living person and a spirit.
Precognition: is also called premonition which involves knowing about future events without prior knowledge of them
Clairvoyance: is a French word that means “clear seeing.” Clairvoyance is described as the ability of a person to see present or future events without prior knowledge of them.
ESP: Extra-sensory perception
Psycho kinesis: is direct mental interaction with animate or inanimate objects.
Bio-PK: are direct mental interactions with living systems.
NDE: is Near death experience.
OBE: Out-of-body experience.
Reincarnation: is the belief that we live successive lives.
Haunting: pertains to particular locations that include lingering apparitions, sounds, movement of objects, and other effects.
Poltergeist: often attributed to spirits, but which are now thought to be due to a living person, frequently an adolescent.
Déjà vu: is very common. Almost everyone has said they have experienced being in a place they have never seen or know anything about. The words are French and mean “already seen.”

When it comes to opinion about and discussing parapsychology people tend to fall into two opposite-thinking groups. One group is dedicated believers who accept all aspects of the paranormal and who will not listen to any arguments that dispute the existence of the paranormal. The other group is strict skeptics who reject any and all evidence that the paranormal exists.

Many scientists have also viewed parapsychology with such skepticism because parapsychology is often inappropriately linked with a variety of “psychic” entertainers, magicians, and so-called “paranormal investigators.” But this is far from what parapsychologists study. For them the study of paranormal phenomena is real and viable.

The paranormal has occurred in all cultures throughout history, and they still do today. paranormal phenomenon remains of intense interest to the general public. There is a fascination with what might be possible.

For decades there have been numerous books, movies and television programs that have explored various aspects of the paranormal and the current trends seem to suggest that there will be many more such books, movies and television shows which will explore the fascination with the paranormal.
